“Ae night the storm the steeples rocked,
Poor labour sweet in sleep was locked,
While burns, wi’ snawy wreeths up-choked,
Wild-eddying swirl,
Or through the mining outlet bocked,
Down headlong hurl.”
From “A Winter Night” by Robert Burns
The great gales appear to have spent their force and the air is calm and still. Icy white fingers of snow still clutch the Pentlands portending Winter has not wrought his last. Despite the January gloom, delicate pale scented snowdrops droop shyly under the shrubs and winter aconites flounce frilly skirts of green.
January is two headed; a time to look back and a time to look forward. The Garden Club is in good spirits. We had a very enjoyable Christmas party and I would like to thank all the members who attended and all who helped and contributed to make this a memorable occasion. I shall never forget those wonderful hats adorned with fruit and vegetables; robins and ivy; and spades and snowmen!
We have just had a very informative talk on Alpines, which defy the rigours of ice and snow to bloom in jewel-like colours. Now we are looking forward to our plant-hunting lecture by Ken Cox of Glendoick. This promises to be a very special occasion. The meeting will be open to friends who will be asked to pay a small fee of £3. Our March meeting will be held on Easter Monday and the talk is about conservatory plants.
Sadly a number of Committee members are standing down at the A.G.M. in April. I know that there are many talents among the members. Please come forward! Your Committee needs you. I stepped into the gap when Pam Hume left but I promised that this would be my final term of office. It is time for a new blood Chairperson. I look forward to hearing from you.
Happy New Year.

Monday 28th March The “Pallet Gardens” at “Gardening Scotland”
The annual show “Gardening Scotland” is being held in Ingliston from Friday 3rd June to Sunday 5th June and will feature the very best and newest in the gardening scene up here. The “Scottish Gardeners Forum” in which we of course participate, is organising a competition for its members. This is to design a pocket-sized garden to a theme of our choice, and to make that mini-garden on site at Ingliston. The SGF think this is too important for Colinton to be left out, and we agree with them. So let’s get organised and create our own little corner of Colinton at the show! Let us have your ideas by our next meeting on 28th February and we can get designing and planning! Good luck and good thinking!
