“The wild swans at Coole”: W B Yeats

The trees are in their autumn beauty,
The woodland paths are dry,
Under the October twilight the water
Mirrors a still sky;
Upon the brimming water among the stones
Are nine-and-fifty swans.

The season of mists and mellow fruitfulness is nearly at an end and I am overcome by a sense of sweet nostalgia. The leaves which have burned out their passion in shades of fiery red, violent orange and ochre yellow are now drifting aimlessly down to scatter across the lawn and settle on the surface of the pond. A few straggling roses and a late deep magenta coloured clematis still cling to life. Summer is gone. Halloween is past. Now is the time to put the garden to bed like sleeping beauty as Christmastide is fast approaching.

The Garden Club has enjoyed two excellent lectures in the autumn programme and we have the interesting prospect of a lecture on water features in November. The October plant sale was a very successful and happy occasion. I would like to thank all those members who helped and all those who attended and supported this event.

On a cold but sunny Saturday in late October, thirty members gathered at the Botanics for workshops on pruning and propagation. The instruction was of a very high quality and was appreciated by all who attended. We look forward to new cuttings at the next sale. This was a new venture for the Club and may be repeated. We owe Jonathon Davey considerable gratitude for introducing and organising this.

After a very positive beginning to the autumn season of Garden Club events, we are looking forward to our own Christmas party on Wednesday, 15th December when a variety of entertainment will be on offer as well as good things to eat and drink. There will be more brain-teasing garden quizzes and a piece of theatricality to titillate and amuse. I do hope you can come and wish to extend a warm welcome to new members and old friends.
