COLINTON GARDEN CLUB
NEWSLETTER NO 66 April 2004

Dear Fellow Gardeners,

Sadly for me, this is my last Newsletter to you as I plan to move to Dundee around mid-summer.

I shall have another new garden to create from bare soil, so hope that time and weather permit me to develop a basic structure by the autumn.

You will be aware that the triangle at the junction of Woodhall Road and Bridge Road has been planted and the path is now open. An official opening ceremony was conducted by Mr Barry Sealey Chairman of Colinton Amenity Association and Councilor Brian Meek on Saturday 28th February.

We have sent a card with your good wishes to David Brass in Colinton Nursing Home and to Cecil McGregor in Braidhills Nursing Home. Both have been in poor health recently and I’m sure the kind thoughts we have expressed will be appreciated.

The Open Garden event on Saturday 5th June will take place from 10am until 12noon.

We have another exciting trip planned for our Summer Outing, which will be on the Saturday 10th July. Our first stop will be to Charles Jenck’s Garden of Portrack. Our second stop will be to Cally Gardens & Nursery at Gatehouse of Fleet subject to confirmation. It will be a slightly longer day than usual starting at 8.30 am. Tickets priced at £15.00 will be available for purchase at our AGM on Monday 26th April. PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING MONEY. If you are unable to attend the AGM tickets will be available from Ann Dean’, 7 Bonaly Crescent Tel 441 3729.

Finally, the AGM is being held on Monday 26 April. We hope that many members will attend. It is your chance to hear reports from the committee and to give us your ideas. As usual we are offering refreshments and we look forward to another pleasant occasion.

I’m sure you will enjoy these wonderful events and look forward to seeing you at all of them.

Kind regards

Pam Hume (Chairperson)

Summer Outing

This year’s summer outing will be on Saturday 10th July. We will visit Portrack, the privately owned garden of Charles Jencks. The garden is not normally open to the public; we have been successful in arranging a tour of the garden with Alistair Clark, the Gardener. The tour usually takes 2 to 3 hours. We also plan to visit Cally Garden at Gatehouse of Fleet subject to confirmation. Tickets £15 available at the AGM and from Ann Dean, 7, Bonaly Crescent ( 441 3729). Cheques payable to: “Colinton Garden Club”. We will be leaving from Westgarth Avenue at 8.30am.

Books and Videos

Feel free to take books and videos out over the summer months at the AGM meeting on 26 April. Just don't forget to bring them back on 27 September!
Thanks, Jo (Librarian)

Garden Techniques Workshop:
Propagation and Pruning, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh
Saturday Morning, 23 October 2004 Following our Members Survey in 2002, the Committee have organized a garden techniques workshop, which will be run by gardening staff from the Botanics. The workshop will last for three hours. Everyone will attend two separate 1 1/2 hour sessions on (1) propagation and (2) pruning. The cost will be £7.00 per person. Please sign up at the AGM meeting or contact Jonathan Davey (0131 441 2827) as soon as possible. There will be 30 places. Eleven members have already signed up. So book now before all the places are taken.

Equipment exchange:

The Club is offering to facilitate the exchange of garden equipment between members. This will be for a Trial period initially. Perhaps you have an item, say a lawn spreader, that is infrequently used – but may be of great benefit to another member? If you are willing to lend or wish to borrow, please liaise with John Lodge, our Implements Officer (441 3934). We hope to compile a list of members willing to participate in this informal arrangement, and to post details on our web page.

Swapaplant

This is an online subscription service. Swapaplant enables you to swap or search for plants with other local members. The address is: www.swapaplant.co.uk and is available to those with Internet access. There is an annual subscription fee of £7.
