Dear Fellow Gardeners,
As I write, I’m admiring the vast spectrum of colours which currently
adorn my garden. There is a bank of shrubs incorporating every imaginable shade
of green and bronze and gold. I drove home earlier via an
avenue of trees where the colours were simply breathtaking. I think this must
be one of the most beautiful autumns I can ever remember.
Those of you who attended our recent meeting on 27th October will know that
we had a rather impromptu change to our planned programme. Our speaker Alan
Bennell was in collision with a deer on his way back from Benmore Botanic Garden
near Dunoon in Argyll and his car was severely damaged. I am pleased to report
that
Alan was not seriously injured and he has promised to present his talk at a
later date.
As I had no contingency plan for such an event I am indebted to the team of expert amateur gardeners who so kindly came to my rescue. David Ferro chaired a panel consisting of Mitchell Maclean and Jim Holmes who answered questions on raspberries and other fruit and vegetables; Professor Ian Stewart who advised us on problems with Rhododendrons and other woodland plants; Elizabeth Ferro and Ann Dean who offered solutions to screening walls and Keith Gordon who had suggestions on garden design. Maureen Heardman offered us tips for successful hanging baskets. Their cheque from me is ‘in the post!’
Finally I would like to remind everyone that this years’ Christmas Party is on THURSDAY 11TH DECEMBER (not Wednesday as it is traditionally) and I hope that you will be able to join us for the evening.
I look forward to seeing you all at our next meeting on Monday 24th November when our speaker will enlighten us on ‘Flowers for Drying’.
I hope you can all continue to enjoy a few more days in your garden before autumn fades to winter.
Kind regards
Pam Hume (Chairperson)
Many thanks to you all for making the Plant Sale such an enjoyable and successful event. The committee members and helpers did a splendid job to make the sale run smoothly. Thanks to you, the club members, for supporting the event and bringing such a wide selection of plants for sale. We collected £180. The equivalent last year was £167. Two new members joined us during the event.
