COLINTON GARDEN CLUB
NEWSLETTER NO 63 AUGUST 2003

Dear Fellow Gardeners,

As our long hot summer appears to be ongoing I trust you have all been able to enjoy time outdoors. I hear people complaining about how dry the soil is and plants are shriveling up due to the lack of rain. Now there’s a shortage in our stores of cooling fans, antihistamine pills and lager! Are we ever happy?

Our Open Garden event in June was well attended and we are grateful to those of you who provided plants for sale. Thanks also to all those who shared with us, the delights of their beautiful gardens. They are, Mr Hamish Gunn, Mr and Mrs Pearson, Mr and Mrs Robinson, Dr and Mrs Perry and Isobel and John Lodge (who provided refreshments)

The Summer Outing was first to Portmore House near Eddleston. The owner Mrs Chrissie Reid has created beautiful double herbaceous borders in shades of purple, an ornamental vegetable garden, herb garden and a shrub rose garden. There are well stocked greenhouses and a Victorian grotto; and around a large pond lurks a life size crocodile!

After enjoying lunch in Peebles our second visit was to Biggar Park owned by Mr and Mrs Barnes. They have created a stunning walled garden with every area a riot of colour. They too have a pond and are working on a Japanese garden. Mrs Barnes had a cutting of Meconopsis for most of us and there were delicious raspberries and gooseberries to sample! I have an excellent recipe for freezer jam, which I can pass on to anyone who may like to try it.

I am pleased to announce the latest innovation is the Colinton Garden Web Site – thanks mainly to the skill and imagination of Sonia Duffy. More of that later, from our new Secretary Christopher Davies.

Sadly during our recess David Brass has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and is now in Colinton Nursing Home as his reduced mobility necessitates greater nursing care. We have sent him a card together with our best wishes.

The first meeting of the new season on Monday 29th September 2003 will be about Simple Garden Design and your Committee and I will look forward to seeing you all then.

Kind regards, Pam Hume (Chairperson)

Colinton Garden Club has a website

Yes, with the expert help of Sonia Duffy, Colinton Garden Club is now on Internet. Go to
      www.colintongardens.org.uk
and have a look! This means not only that you, as members, can get the latest information, but also that anyone (worldwide, if necessary) can find out about us and contact us.

The website is very easy to use. Just type in the address and when you see the “home page”, click on the menu displayed: “events”, “information”, “loans”, “sales”, “gallery”, “contacts”, “links” – in order to find the information you are looking for. You will also find links to like-minded organisations.

We will be keeping the website updated regularly, including photographs of events, reports of meetings, and a copy of our newsletter (which in addition will still be delivered to your home).

We are sure that you will welcome this innovation and be pleased to see Colinton Garden Club ‘on the cutting edge of technology!’

Once again, our thanks to Sonia Duffy for the professional way in which she set this up for us.

Christopher Davies

Seed discounts

In an on-going attempt to save money we can now offer you a discounted price on seeds. The Kings catalogue is a large list of all kinds of vegetable seeds (including organic, herbs, oriental vegetables); flower seeds (annual, biennial and perennial); and even green manures, which I have tried last year and found very successful.

As well as you obtain the seeds much cheaper than in the shops, the club benefits as well, as it gets a percentage of sales. I hope to have the catalogue on show at the September meeting, or phone: Ann Dean 441 3729 to receive a copy. Thanks,

Ann Dean
