COLINTON GARDEN CLUB |
![]() |
At the time of writing my contribution to the last Newsletter of this session the weather has made a dramatic return to wet and windy conditions. The last six weeks of warm sunny days seem like a distant memory, but I hope you have all been able to take advantage of the time to start your Spring gardening.
I am dismayed to find that by neglecting to treat my lawn with an Autumn `weed
and feed’, moss has spread rapidly throughout, and invaded the borders.
Now that I've used the Club's scarifier I only have to decide how to dispose
of the six bags of moss which are a testament to my toils!
Those of you who were unable to attend Claire Heaneys' talk on `Propagation'
missed an excellent evening as she provided many examples of plants to illustrate
her methods.
Our final meeting of this session is our AGM on Monday 28'h April and like
last year, we plan to provide wine and soft drinks and have an opportunity
to incorporate some of your suggestions. Please do join our committee and
have your ideas put into action. Sadly Ann Dean can no longer continue
as our Secretary
and she will be sorely missed. Our grateful thanks for all her hard work.
I could not have completed my seven months of office without all the help
and encouragement of my fellow committee members. May I take this opportunity
to
thank all of them for their invaluable support. I would also like to
thank those of you who have attended our meetings and endured my feeble
attempts
with our PA system. I really will try to master the microphone before
the start of our next season.
May I wish you all a fruitful summer enjoying your garden and we look forward
to your company at our AGM.
Kind regards
Pam Hume (Chairperson)
This will take place on 14th June from 10am –12noon.
This year's outing is later than usual, so we can visit two lovely gardens
with seasonal attractions.
The first garden is near Peebles, and it has stunning double herbaceous borders
in shades of purple, an ornamental vegetable garden, a herb garden, a shrub
rose garden and parterre, as well as a greenhouse with a Victorian grotto.
The second garden near Biggar has a collection of old-fashioned and new roses,
a traditional walled garden, a Japanese garden and pools.
The date is Saturday, 19th July, and the cost is £13, which includes
the coach, entry to both gardens, and tea and biscuits.
The lunch stop will be in Peebles, where you can picnic by the river, or treat
yourself to lunch in one of the many eating places there.
Tickets are available from Ann Dean phone 441 3729. Please book early, as the
summer outing is a very popular and enjoyable occasion. Cheques should be made
payable to Colinton Garden Club
Helen Sadler of the Water of Leith Conservation Trust is organizing another
planting day for our butterfly garden under Colinton Bridge. This will be
on
the morning of Saturday 10th May, so bring along any suitable spare plants
then, or deliver them to Ann Dean beforehand if you can't come yourself.
Come along to lend a hand, or just to see what is going on!
Our collection
of library books and videos will be available for an extended loan period over
the summer months. In addition videos will now be free of
charge. A full catalogue of stock is available on the notice board for consultation
at the meetings and from Mrs. Jo McEwan at jo.mcewan@btinternet.com
Ann Dean will be looking after the purchasing of bulbs at below retail price.
This will be done in a similar way to our fertilizer order. The form is enclosed
and members can forward their orders to Ann.
Lawson and Donaldson, Calder Road, Hermiston (453 5522) can supply all gardening
equipment excluding plants at wholesale prices to members on production of
your membership card. This offers large savings on all items.
Mower Power Services are offering an introductory 15% discount on servicing,
repairs and spares. Further details from the enclosed card.
The Garden Club would like to hear from anyone who may be able to offer their expertise to members in any relevant area. If you are able to help there will be a sheet for you to add your name to on the library table at the meetings.
The Club is planning to set up a website and would appeal to anyone who would be willing to volunteer to assist with the setting up and design of the site. If you can help please contact a committee member.
I am keen to reconstruct our disintegrating garden paths myself,
but don’t know how to go about it. Could anyone provide a complimentary “mentoring
/ advisory service”?
Murdo McEwan – Tel. 441 5034; e-mail m.mcewan@btinternet.com
Friends interested in joining the club are welcome to attend our events and meetings and to see for themselves what we have to offer.
